HOW IDS Home Sleep Testing (HST) Works
Medicare Mail Order - Medicare has recently modified regulations to allow coverage a Home Sleep Study for patients that have been clinically evaluated and diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. IDS is very excited about this new policy, which will allow Medicare patients diagnosed with OSA a comfortable, accurate, and time-saving alternative to the traditional full PSG study in the lab. However, contrary to other medicare policy which allow CPAP suppliers to courier equipment to the patients home, the home sleep study policies do not allow the supplier to be involved in testing process. To support restriction, IDS is now rolling out an advanced Mail Order system for Medicare and Medicare HMO patients.
Here is how it works:
- Physician clinically evaluates and diagnoses a patient with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
- Physician completes and IDS test order form. & faxes the order to the IDS, Inc.
- The Physician choose to enter a 'Local medical equipment supplier' on the form. The patient will have the option to sign a release of the test records to this company if they wish to ensure that the patient is promptly taken care of, if therapy is needed.
- Our professional IDS Staff processes the order, and contacts the patient to schedule delivery and verify insurance.
- The test equipment is prepared and shipped to the patient.
- Patient self-applies the Home Sleep Testing equipment following IDS video instructions and paper instructions supplemented by 24 hour patient support if necessary.
- The following morning, the patient packs up the equipment in the included return box with included return label and places it in the mailbox. IDS Support is available if needed for the patient for this step as well.
- Upon receipt of the equipment at IDS, we will process the test equipment, and score the data.
- One of our credentialed sleep physicians will provide a professional, electronically signed, interpretation of the test report.
- The completed, interpreted report is immediately faxed to the original ordering physician
- if the patient signed the medical release to a supplier, the report will be made available at this time as well.
- If the result along with the physician clinical evaluation confirms the diagnosis of OSA, the patient may be started on therapy, which is typically a 12 week trial of Positive Airway Pressure, aka CPAP, VPAP or APAP.
- Process typically completed in 1-2 weeks from initial order depending on patient scheduling and ship times.
COMMERCIAL INSURERS
Other insurers than medicare are also starting to provide coverage for Home Sleep Testing for OSA patients. The mail order system described currently works in this situration as well. However as more of these carriers allow the service, IDS will begin placing testing equipment around the country with local CPAP suppliers to further decrease the turnaround time of the testing process.
Here is how the DME Delivered model will work:
- Physician clinically evaluates patient for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, creates test order & transfers the order to the IDS, Inc. IDTF in one of the following ways:
- Faxed directly from the physician to the IDS IDTF
- Faxed from physician to the HME who then forwards the order to the IDS IDTF by fax
- Order is Processed by IDS data entry (faxed orders) within minutes of receipt. The HME test delivery order is created online in their IDS web account and a notification is sent via email that the testing equipment should be delivered to the patient.
- HME Connects the Sleep Test Device to their computer and initializes it with the patient's name and test order #.
- HME can now schedule appointment and deliver IDS testing equipment, video instructions, and forms to the patient for whom order is requested. Alternately, the patient could come to the HME office and pick the unit up. IDS provides 24hr patient support!
- HME returns to patient's home to pick up equipment or patient returns to the DME company.
- HME logs in to secure account at www.instantdiagnostic.com , chooses the appropriate Test/patient in their browser, and uploads the Sleep test file to the IDS processing server.
- Test data are processed, scored, validated and Professionally Interpreted
- Test result reports are created and distributed within minutes by the IDS analysis server:
- Results are sent to ordering physician immediately by fax or secure online account.
- If HME has faxed a Medical Release form or meets elegibility to view test results, the may view them in their IDS web account.
- Patients must request test results through their physician.
- Test results are kept electronically on file for at least 7 years.
- Process typically can be completed in 2-5 days from initial order!
